No, I didn't have some special insight that Mr. Hewish was going to kick the bucket the next day, I just screwed up on which famous placeholder record I converted to his record and accidentally grabbed one I created the day before he died. So no, this isn't one of those strange coincidences I love to talk about in my Whistling Through the Graveyard series of articles.

To actually discuss Mr. Hewish for a change, he was an English radio astronomer who won a boatload of awards for his role in the discovery of pulsars. There is some controversy now because Hewish's student Jocelyn Bell (now Jocelyn Bell Burnell, still living as of 2021) actually discovered the first pulsar, but she was given no credit in the Nobel Prize citation. She herself defended the decision, saying it would be inappropriate to recognize research students for such prizes. Other astronomers saw it differently, including Fred Hoyle, who argued that Bell should have been recognized as well.

Here are some other honors and awards Hewish received. As I get these set up in the database I will also add them as searchable keywords, but I might not ever get around to adding all of them:

Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1968
Eddington Medal, Royal Astronomical Society (1969)
Dellinger Gold Medal, International Union of Radio Science (1972)
Albert A. Michelson Medal, Franklin Institute (1973, jointly with Jocelyn Bell Burnell)
Fernand Holweck Medal and Prize (1974)
Nobel Prize for Physics (jointly) (1974) (already added as a keyword)
Hughes Medal, Royal Society (1976)
Elected a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP) in 1998

Nobel Prize in Physics1974 for work on pulsars, joint award with Martin Ryle
