I found his marker in February 2023 and was a bit stumped by it. I knew I had the lot and space right but the Forest Lawn website lists this space under "John Joseph Egan" with no dates. The webcemeteries site for Glendale shows the interment date as 31 March 1950.

If I had looked at space 3 of that lot and not just spaces 4 - 6 the marker for the woman in Space 3 would have led me down this path sooner, but I didn't. I could find no records on a John Egan and the only Russell L Stine in Southern California I could find had died in 1916. However, I did find his family search record. An indication was made that he had been buried (actually inurned) in 1916 but when I looked at the reference card from Rosedale Crematory it noted that his ashes were returned to his family after cremation, so he was not in fact inurned at Rosedale (now Angelus Rosedale) cemetery.

So the problem I had was tying the Russell Stine who died in 1916 to this man who was inurned in Forest Lawn in 1950. Fortunately, looking at his family search record I noticed that his mother was Anna Lina Briggs Stine but that at the time of her death her surname was McClain. That rang a bell and I looked again at who was buried next to Russell in Space 3 of the same lot and wonder of wonders, it turned out to be Anna McClain! She had separated from or divorced Russell's father between 1900 and 1910 and married a lodger of hers named Elmer McClain some time in the 1940s (sources differ on the date). I would question this as Elmer was almost 25 years younger than Anna, but multiple sources confirm their marriage.

In any event, that seals the deal as far as I am concerned. Anna McClain must have had some health issues or otherwise had a premonition of her approaching meeting with her maker, because Russell was inurned on 31 March 1950 and Anna died on the 10th of May 1950, less than two months later. Her death certificate says she was buried on 12 May 1950, finally being reunited with her son who had died almost 34 years earlier.

BTW, I did check Find A Grave to see if there was a marker photo for Anna, and there was. It doesn't show her maiden name, but it does show her prior married name, the marker lists her as "Anna Stine McClain."

As for John Joseph Egan, I have no idea who he is or was, although if he was an adult male in 1950 he is most likely dead by now. The informant on Anna's d/c was her husband Elmer McClain. If I ever call the Forest Lawn records office again and manage to get hold of Dennis V. if he is still working there it might be worth asking a few questions as to where the name came from. He could be the person who purchased the lot for Russell's remains, but I don't know why his name would not come off the entry once Russell was inurned there.

There is a John Joseph Egan who was born in 1897 and died in 1963 who is buried in Compton, California, which is not that far from Glendale. If I get bored some time I will do some digging and see if I can find any connection between him and the Stines or Anna McClain. But I'm not holding my breath as far as finding one.
