There are no records specific to Adaline that show her under any surname other than McDevitt. She might show up in the 1840 census under a different household, but since children were not enumerated by name in that census year, there is no way to know for sure.
Daughter Annie's Ohio birth record shows her mother as Adaline McDevitt
Her son William's Ohio death record shows his father as John McDevitt and his mother Adaline Fultz
The California death records for Annie show her father as William McDevitt, and her mother as Adeline Crawford.
There are no other records for either Annie or William that show any other surnames for Adaline. Her son William always went by the surname McDevitt, and her daughter Annie used McDevitt as a maiden name until her marriage, and her death certificate indicates the same name.
The only brother who there is any record of for Adaline is Charles McDevitt. The only John McDevitt is Adaline's father, the grandfather of Annie and William. The only William McDevitt known to be in the family is Adaline's son, Annie's brother.
I don't know how to know if Adaline was not in fact a McDevitt (perhaps a Crawford as her daughter's d/c indicates). The information from her son's d/c seems to have garbled his information with his mother's information (i.e., it shows her father as his father, and it shows her mother's maiden name as her maiden name). Unless, of course, Adaline was a niece of John and Mary and not their daughter, which I cannot rule out.
It is of course possible that William and Annie were just born out of wedlock and the confusion about the different names was due to attempts to obfuscate this fact.
Other than doing some DNA testing of any living descendants I have no idea how to resolve these questions, it is certainly beyond my ability. I am just recording what I have found here for posterity,
I may put this on her Find A Grave page as well, just in case anyone else chooses to weigh in on this subject.
